A Closer Look at iPhone OS 4.0

I guess all the Apple iPhone user must be anticipated for the release of the new iPhones OS 4.0. iPhone OS 4.0 will work with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the second and third-generation iPod touch this summer, and with iPad in the fall. Not all features are compatible with all devices. For example, multitasking is available only with iPhone 3GS and the third-generation iPod touch (32GB and 64GB models from late 2009).So if you have the first generation of iPhone or iPod Touch you basically left neglected from the upgrade. This also means it’s time to upgrade your model. Full detail of upgrade comparability are available at Apple.

A total of 7 major functions will be added for the latest release of OS 4.0. Which included:
1. Multitasking
One of the most important features among the 7 others, users can now switch from one app to another without sacrificing performance and battery life. As an example, one now surfing the net while listening to Pandora or answering the calls on Skype while while playing a game or checking email. Other multi-tasking function that made possible for the new upgrade included Background audio, Voice over IP, Background location, Push notifications, Local notifications, Task completion and Fast app switching

2. App Folder
Organize apps into folders with drag-and-drop simplicity. Now one can just drag and drop the apps icon on top of each other and a new folder will be created automatically. The folder is also automatically named according to the apps category e.g. video and can be renamed if the user chooses to do so. Get faster access to your favorites and browse and manage up to 2160 apps at once — many more than the current limit of 180 apps.

3. New Mail App
Unified inbox will allow user to views the emails from multiple in just one inbox. If you opt to go from one inbox to another you could do that as well, as the fast inbox switching function will enhance the accessing speed. And messages could now be organize by thread for better arrangement while user can now open the attachment with the 3rd party apps.

4. Support for iBooks
You could now browse, buy, and read books on a mobile device. Easily flip through the pages of a book you’ve downloaded from the iBookstore while listening to your music collection. Now you could bring your books together wherever you go. Browse tens of thousands of books — many of them free — by title, author, or genre. You can even check out reviews and read sample pages before you buy.

5. Enterprise
As spell out by the name, now the IT managers have even more reasons to deploy iPhone throughout their enterprises. The new OS included couple of new features in security, scalability, and compatibility that would benefit enterprises out there.
- Enhanced data protection
- Easier device fleet management through Mobile Device Management
- Wireless distribution for in-house apps
- Multiple Exchange accounts
- Exchange Server 2010 support
- SSL VPN support

6. Game Center
Apple’s centralized gaming network that is going to let users invite friends to game together, play in multiplayer sessions through matchmaking, put their scores on leaderboards and keep track of game’s achievements like the current PSN or Xbox Live.

7. Apple Ad (iAd)
iAd is Apple’s own mobile advertising platform which going to take advantages given by the huge demographic that apps have. The theory here is that instead of relying on links to external websites, which pull users out of apps whenever they tap on an ad, developers can use Apple’s new tools to keep people in the app while still showing them advertising—sort of like popover browser windows. You can watch videos, play games, and even buy apps from within these ads. This is in the iPhone OS 4 developer tools, but it’s not explicitly a part of OS 4, so you won’t see apps with iAds until later this year. Its checklist includes:

- Ads with better emotion and interactivity
- Ads that keep you in app
- Built into iPhone OS
- Sold and hosted by Apple themselves
- 60% of ads revenues go to developer

And More…
These are just seven of the biggest features coming to iPhone 4.0 OS. More than 100 user features are being added and developers will have access to more than 1500 new APIs.

In short, with the introduction of new features it will also help Apple a lot in generating more revenue. As Apple get more oportunity to sell Books, to sell it own Ads and to sell more games.
